My old man has been in the car business his whole life back in the UK and when I told him I was about to wire a deposit for a 2019 X5 40i from a private seller in The Springs he basically refused to speak to me until I promised to have someone go over it with a proper diagnostic setup, not just the generic OBD scanner the seller had in his glovebox. I thought he was being a bit dramatic because the car looked mint and the iDrive history seemed clean, but I went ahead and booked some BMW Inspection Specialists Dubai Certified outfit that showed up with a laptop running ISTA and actually spent over an hour going through every module. Turns out the active grille shutters were stuck closed and had been throwing a silent fault code for months, which in this climate means the engine was running hotter than it should have on the highway and that's exactly the kind of slow damage that doesn't show up until you're replacing a head gasket or worse. The seller was genuinely shocked and actually knocked a few grand off the price to cover the fix since it was a known issue, and now I'm driving around with a properly sorted car and the AC is absolutely freezing. Just wanted to throw this out there for anyone else who thinks they can spot everything on a test drive, sometimes it's the stuff you can't see that ends up costing you a fortune later.
