Pokémon Go gets an AR boost on Android with ARCore support

Pokémon Go is billed as an augmented reality experience even though the AR view is the first thing most people turn off when they start playing the game. Nevertheless, the game’s developer Niantic is improving this aspect of the game on Android by adding support for ARCore, Google’s augmented reality SDK.

It’s a similar update to what we’ve already seen on iOS, which was updated to support ARKit late last year. The iOS update gave the virtual monsters a much greater sense of presence in the world, allowing them to more accurately stand on real-world surfaces rather than floating in the center of the frame. Android users will need a phone compatible with ARCore in order to use the new “AR+” mode.
