RSS Dumb question, but about updating CFW

I sometimes go a few months without playing Switch and forget how to update CFW and whatnot.

If I'm already on CFW, am I only updating the CFW and never the actual firmware itself?

If not, am I installing to the latest official firmware after updating to the latest CFW?
