RSS Upgrade FW for 8.0 to 9.0.1 then jailbreak

I have a 8.0.0 switch that i just picked up, i just got my first modded with the cfw on 9.0.1, i am wondering if i should upgrade this switch through internet before i mod it. Will new games work on old FW and will i have to upgrade it later on. Not sure what to do
