RSS Is the sysnand located on the switch internal memory or the sd card ?

Hi,
i bought a used hacked nintedo switch , the original owner told me that he didn't use emunand.
now i want to use an emunand, should i format the switch before following the guide ? or was the sysnand on his sd card.
