Even though there are very few games that benefit from or make use of GameCube controllers on Wii U/Switch, I was surprised to find that if the 8BitDo Retro Receiver (Bluetooth adaptor) was daisy-chained with a third-party GameCube USB controller adaptor (WUP-028 clone), it simply wouldn't work.
Power doesn't appear to be an issue because the adaptor blinks and even connects to a compatible controller, but inputs simply don't get registered no matter what port the adaptor was plugged...
